Chatham's Prettiest Walk (or Run)

Chatham, MA~3.1 milesWalk or run3 min read

There are prettier three miles somewhere in the world. We just haven't found them.

This is the loop we walk on a slow morning and run when we've got the legs for it — a full lap of the best of Chatham. It strings together the harbor, the grand old inn, the lighthouse overlook and a working marina, then hands you back to Main Street in time for coffee. Flat, quiet, and just as good with a stroller or a leashed dog as it is at a running pace.

The route, step by step

  1. Start at the town lot just off Main Street, in the heart of downtown. (Arrive early in summer — it fills up.)
  2. Head east on Seaview Street until it meets Shore Road.
  3. Follow Shore Road along the water, past the Chatham Bars Inn, to the Lighthouse Beach overlook — the big view out to the sandbars.
  4. Take a right onto Bridge Street, down past Stage Harbor Marina.
  5. Turn right onto Stage Harbor Road and let it wind you back toward the village.
  6. It returns you to Main Street, right where you began — a little over three miles, all told.

In July and August, go early — you'll have the light, the quiet and the parking to yourself. There's shade on the inland streets, but the Shore Road stretch is open to the sun, so bring water on a warm day.

The kind of view the whole rest of the country drives north for.

Make a morning of it

The best part of finishing on Main Street is that you finish where the coffee is. Cool down with a slow lap of the shops and watch the town wake up — the truest hour of a Chatham summer we know.
